Articles: Microfinance in Rwanda: booming after the genocide and Rwanda: microfinance - a way out of the abyss?
Rwanda is a huge market for microfinance due to the high level of poverty -6/10 citizens are living below the poverty line- and the lack of banking infrastructure -only 10% of Rwandans have a bank account, while the figure in rural areas is only 3%. However, problems still run high, high dependence on donors -Rwanda receives half its total budget from international donors- and corruption exists in the system as well as bankruptcy and understaffing in the microfinance organizations.
We see some parallels with China microfinance, the industry in Rwanda has a relatively shorter history, and if able to successfully tackle current problems that both countries share, has an absolutely huge potential client base to help escape poverty
