This is the first blog entry I write for Wokai, although I tend to be posting them quite often. The last few weeks, we've been planning new strategies for the chapters which means back to back to back conference calls and serious amounts of email swapping. It looks like we've managed to reach a consensus, and both our chapters and HQ should be running 200% again next month (which happens to be in 3 days).
Activity is picking up again as we reach the end of the summer. Boston and Toronto recently held their Drinks For a Better World, New York is holding theirs next Thursday, our very new Dallas chapter will be holding their first event on September 8th while Hong Kong is organizing a second Wokai Scramble for October 9th.
With all these calls and events, I sometimes forget I'm in our Beijing courtyard office and find myself imagining the people and venues in North America and Asia. How much fun would it be to join in and actually meet everyone face to face? Some Wokai volunteers I've communicated so much with I have the impression I know them, although I don't even know what they look like. When I see pictures and blog posts about the events they hold it helps me paint an image of them, and imagine myself taking part in the chapter activities.
But every now and then there is some real traveling, like a few months back when I visited our field partner in Chifeng or this weekend when I'm in Shanghai. I flew down here to see the World Expo and at the same time record a interview with Chinesepod. This is a great organization that have created a Chinese language learning system based on podcasts, and they wanted to hear about Wokai and share our activities with their subscribers. For those of you who know Shanghai you'll realize what I mean when I say I almost missed my meeting with them because my plane got deviated from Hongqiao and we ended up landing in Pudong. Instead of being 30min away from the Chinesepod offices I was 1h30 away. I still managed to make it and the interview should be up next week. It's a free download so check it out if you can!
Today I'm off to visit the expo and be able to imagine myself - for a brief moment at least - to be visiting all the represented countries.
